3nd Annual Open Archives Tour:
Cambridge in the 1860s
Harvard University Archives
Portrait of goodies outside Harvard Hall, ca. 1862; photograph by George Warren (Archives call number HUPSF Goodies 7).
The women who cleaned the Harvard dormitories were known as goodies. The Harvard University Archives collects, preserves, and provides access to a comprehensive record of life at Harvard, as well as life in Cambridge, over the past four centuries.
On the Open Archives Tour, the Archives featured photographs, letters, diaries, and other primary sources from the 1860s that reflect the University and its relationship with the surrounding community during a turbulent time in the nation's history.
