Cornelius Gerrit Hendrick Bennink, 1861.
Cornelius Bennink was born in Holland and moved to America at the age of 4. He enlisted in the Army in April 1861, entering Company D, 5th Regiment of the Massachusetts Infantry under Captain Burgess and fought in many major battles, including Williamsburg, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Cold Harbor. Following the war, he was engaged in the mercantile profession and active in state and city government.
This is an example of the material in archival collections of the Cambridge Historical Society. CHS collects personal and family papers, organizational records, business records, and images and paraphernalia related to Cambridge, Massachusetts and the people who have called our city home. On the Open Archives Tour we displayed material related to Cambridge Families in the 1860s.
