First Baptist Church. Photo 1866. View south from Prospect Street, Central Square.
The original, wood meetinghouse (1817) burned in 1866 and was soon replaced with this imposing Gothic Revival-style structure designed by S. S. Woodcock. (Sadly, in 1881 this building too was destroyed by fire; it was immediately replaced by the present church, designed by the architects Hartwell & Richardson, and built on the 1866 foundation.)
